Rather than intellectual originality, the graph captures a different aspect of the history of psychology. In this regard, the greater weighted degree of James McKeen Cattell followed by G. Stanley Hall and Joseph Jastrow is unsurprising. Those psychologists with the highest degree centrality within the early history of the APA exhibit a remarkable degree of homophily, even given the organization’s fairly homogeneous character. They epitomized the organization men in science. They created its graduate programs and periodicals. They promoted the new science in a variety of public fora. In other words, the leadership of the early of APA was dominated by men of a practical bent. They were more interested in mental testing than German-style experimental psychology. They helped created a uniquely American approach to psychology: functionalism (Green, 2009) (Fig. 7.2).
